Facebook Lands in Licking County

I am an avid Facebook user.  If you follow GROW on Facebook, we are always trying to post/share/highlight events, happenings, & stories of interest re: economic development, community development, advancements in manufacturing, local stories of interest, and technology.  So last week’s announcement of Facebook opening a $750M data center in New Albany – and Mark Zuckerberg sharing the news – was a really BIG deal.

But how big?  How about the 2nd largest project in the history of JobsOhio BIG.  This announcement of New Albany’s newest tech partner locating in western Licking County solidifies our place as not only a manufacturing base community (Ampacet, Boeing, Owens Corning, THK, & Covestro all having major facilities in Licking County), not only as logistics hub (Amazon fulfillment center, Harry & David Operations and fulfillment center, Accel, Inc’s facility in the International Beauty Park) but now we are a leader in technology-services (Amazon Web Services & now Facebook’s $750M facility).

But that is the tip of the iceberg.  Licking County is now home to three of the largest consumers of renewable energy (Amazon, Facebook, & Owens Corning) – with plans for more exploration into this market-place to help our existing partners with their energy needs.  Partners throughout our community continue to evaluate education needs to ensure that what is being taught locally (primary, secondary, post-secondary levels) reflects the evolving workforce needs here so residents can continue to live, work, play, & invest here in Licking County.

How are we doing this?  Currently GROW is collaborating with partners from across our communities and our consulting team at the Montrose Group to develop an Economic Development Action Plan that will aid in informing where investments in transportation, infrastructure, and workforce (including educational needs) need to be made to ensure that we continue to grow responsibly and sustainably for the next generation.  Interested in learning more?  Be sure to check out GROW’s Facebook (ha!), Twitter, or contact us directly to get involved.

Facebook’s announcement is BIG.  Its big for New Albany.  Its big for Licking County.  Its big for the Columbus-Region.  However, we cannot rest on just BIG announcements.  Let’s continue to focus on our future to ensure that the rising tide continues to lift all boats.
